Tonight

Turns out I'm flying out of Musselwhite tonight instead of tomorrow morning, which means I get to spend the evening in magical Thunder Bay! I don't mind Thunder Bay so much except it's so spread out, and the cab ride from the airport to the downtown is like $40. Guess I'll be eating in the hotel and watching "Hancock" or something.

  1. At least it isn't like the Sudbury airport, and you can actually take the city bus into town.

Okay, and as for staying in your hotel to eat, I have a "top 5" suggestion list of where you could go instead.

    1) The Golden Wok - on the corner of May & Victoria in Fort William (have the noodle bowl, I promise...)
    2) Obviously: The Hoito - on Bay & Algoma in Port Arthur. TBay has the largest population of Finns outside of Finland, or something. So you need to go to the former Finnish Labour Temple for homecooking-style meal made by a collective. I met Tina Keeper there once.
    3) Thunder Bay Restaurant - a little hole in the wall just down the street from the Hoito. Loud Italian lady owns and operates it. The second largest ethnic group in TBay after the Finns is the Italians.
    4) Norma Jean's Diner - that's right, diner, 1950s style. It is across from the Golden Wok. Large portion. Grumpy middle-aged woman in flared poodle skirt serving you. Cardboard cut-out of Elvis by the front door.
    5) Now usually I would suggest my favourite watering hole, the Royalton, but since you want to spend the evening both entertained and unshanked, I'd say: The Apollo (Red River Rd.), Jack's (Cumberland), and Kilroy's (Cumberland). All are close together, in Port Arthur's downtown by the marina, and always have good live music. The Madhouse (by the Hoito is good, too.

Those are my suggestions for next time you get stuck in the big bad Bay City...
