A couple of months ago, I was running quite steadily up at the mine. I brought Cameron's running shoes with me once because I forgot mine, and as it turned out they were about a size too small for me.
Goshdarnit if I didn't run in those dadgum shoes anyway. As it turns out, I also had no nail clippers up at the mine for those two weeks, and as I ran, the toes of the shoes pulled up at the nail on the big toe of my left foot.
Needless to say, eventually the nail turned yellow and then brown.
A couple of months have passed, and the nail has remained the same colour.
Last night, while I was watching Hellboy 2 on my computer, I attempted to scratch my right foot with my left toe, and consarnit if that brown nail didn't just about tear clean off.
It wasn't as painful as you might imagine, it was just unsettling looking underneath something that isn't supposed to be looked underneath.
Underneath, it was pink and there was a little prehensile nail growing in to usurp the position of the existing nail.
So, I pushed the existing nail back down. It is still attached to the cuticle on the right side of my left toe.
As of now, my plan of action is basically to continue to push down the old nail until the new nail grows big and strong enough to take its place. Should circumstances call for it, I may consider more drastic measures ranging from gluing the existing nail back onto my foot to actually cutting it off. (the nail I mean, not the foot).
Is there a large brown toenail fairy?
Do you have any idea how scary it is to feel you entire toenail come off without warning?
